When a Hollywood heartthrob (Matt Dillon, playing a Brad Pitt look-alike) “outs” his small-town high-school drama teacher Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) during the Oscar telecast, the entire (fictional) town of Greenleaf, Indiana, wonders if Howard’s really gay. More to the point, Howard wonders, too–quite a dilemma considering his pending marriage to Emily (Joan Cusack), who’s patiently tolerated a three-year engagement. While a TV reporter (Tom Selleck) covers the ensuing furor, screenwriter Paul Rudnick and director Frank Oz make good-natured humor their highest priority, turning the “crisis” of coming out into a laugh-out-loud spin on conventional romantic comedy. The result is a film that delivers constant laughs and a golden opportunity for its fine cast to show off their considerable comedic talents–especially Cusack, who deservedly earned an Oscar nomination for her hilarious performance as the bride who’s almost as confused as her would-be husband. That Rudnick and Oz have made a great comedy that’s both old-fashioned and relevant to the late 20th century is no small feat, but In & Out has no hidden agenda apart from its triumphant desire to entertain. –Jeff Shannon

A very offbeat subject gives this Western its beefy flavor: English lady Maureen O’Hara brings a prize Hereford bull to the Wild West, where she plans to introduce its hardy bloodline into longhorn country. Cattle puncher James Stewart finds the idea suspect, but he likes this redhead, so he manages to tag along through stampede, gunfight, and blizzard. Director Andrew V. McLaglen generally steers a pleasing course, although the movie occasionally stumbles between brawling comedy and western drama. One stunt sequnce, a run of longhorns through a desert canyon, qualifies as a hair-raiser. Brian Keith, wearing a gigantic red beard, does a Scots accent as a cattle baron, and veteran cowhands Ben Johnson and Jack Elam are around to lend atmosphere. The big bull’s name is Vindicator, and he obeys whenever Juliet Mills whistles “God Save the QUn”–did we mention this is a very offbeat subject for a Western? –Robert Horton

A date-movie masqurading as an Indian uprising flick, has Scott Brady as a frontier painter with a penchant for models, trying to forestall war with the Iroquois. The plot follows the conventional line, with the frontiersmen (and women) besieged in their fort, driven back into their hovels, then saved at the last moment by the cavalry. But the focus is not on the story line, and clearly on the bustline, as various fine babes vie for the attentions of Brady, including a squaw played by Rita Gam. One scene depicts what appears to be an Iroquois version of a wet T-shirt contest, with Gam the clear winner. On the DVD you’ll find optional Japanese subtitles, lengthy notes on the cast and crew, and what appears to be a fairly unfaded print of the film with vivid colors. –Jim Gay

This underrated film by director Paul Mazursky stars Richard Dreyfuss as an underemployed actor who is offered a great acting role, though outside of New York. Still, beggars can’t be choosers and he accepts–only to discover that the part involves impersonating the dictator of Parador, a troubled Central American country on the verge of revolution. The dictator has died, but his chief adviser (Raul Julia) doesn’t want that news to come out; he’d rather continu the charade that the big guy is still in charge. And to his surprise, the actor discovers that he enjoys the acting challenge, until he figures out that Julia is positioning himself to take over as the country’s tru strongman. Naturally, Dreyfuss also discovers that, aside from enjoying the perks of power (including the late dictator’s toothsome mistress, Sonia Braga), he actually has the power to do some good–to Julia’s chagrin. Dreyfuss captures the actor’s insecurity, while Julia is hilarious as the wild-eyed adviser to whom torture is second nature. –Marshall Fine
